Two children died Thursday night when a fire destroyed the building they were sleeping in.

The Gatesville Fire Department was called to a portable building on Star Lane in in the community of Slater, about 25 minutes southwest of Gatesville, just after 10:00.

Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden told KCEN HD that the fire had completely consumed the building once his crews arrived.

Firefighters from Evant also came to assist.

They went into the building and found the bodies of twin two year old boys, just days away from their third birthday.

The storage building had been converted into a type of bunkhouse, and the boys were asleep at the time of the fire.

When the fire began, the boys’ mom was next door in the house with her boyfriend, and his parents.

They were cleaning up from Thanksgiving dinner.

She tried to get into the building to save her boys, but the flames were too strong.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the boys went to Dallas for autopsies.

The State Fire Marshall’s Office, the Texas Rangers, and the DPS Crime Lab are all investigating what caused the fire.

They also brought in a fire accelerant sniffing dog.

Coryell County Sheriff Johnny Burks said, “We have some ideas that maybe a butane heater caused the fire, but until the fire marshals look at it a little closer they can’t make that determination at this time.”

Burks also said the adults at the home could before a grand jury depending on what investigators found.

However given the circumstances, he did not expect them to face charges.

The Sheriff is not releasing the name of the boys until all their family in the area has been notified.
