SLATER, CORYELL COUNTY — A Central Texas mother is mourning the loss of her two twin boys after they burned to death in a Thanksgiving night fire.

It happened in the small town of Slater, 17 miles west of Gatesville. Authorities say the mother of the two-year-old twins was visiting her boyfriend and his parents at their home in Slater in the 400 Block of Star Lane off County Road 139.

Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden says they received a call around 10 p.m. Thursday about a small storage building on fire and two young children inside. When fire crews arrived they found the two young boys dead inside the burnt up storage building.

“It’s really a somber mood,” said Johnny Burks, Sheriff for Coryell County.

The State Marshal and Texas Rangers were on scene investigating most of the day Thursday and Sheriff Burks says they will be sending out a DPS Crime Lab to dig through the leftover debris to try to figure out what caused the fire.

“We have some ideas that it may have been a butane heater that caused the fire, but until the Fire Marshals look at it a bit closer I can’t make that determination,” said Burks.

Burks told News Channel 25 the converted storage building looked like it had been made into a small apartment. The twins were trapped inside during the blaze and the mother wasn’t able to get them out.

“It’s hard to explain especially when you lose two small children at this time of the year.”

The twins’ bodies were taken to Dallas for an autopsy. There’s no word on whether that distraught mother will face any charges.

The Sheriff told News Channel 25 they’ll probably release the boys’ names sometime Saturday after all the relatives have been notified.
